Two things do most of the damage down here. The first is the parkway. Trucks off the Knapp Street and Ocean Avenue exits kick grit up from the shoulder, and at that speed a small stone leaves a star break that starts walking before you are back on Avenue Z. The second is water. Storm surge and street flooding near the waterfront soak door cards and seals, and a window left sitting in salt water binds in its regulator until the tempered pane splits at a corner. Boat trailers coming off Knapp Street throw their own share of gravel.
From the bay, the simplest run is Avenue Z west to Ocean Parkway, north to 55th Street, then a left onto Fort Hamilton Parkway. Roughly six miles, about twenty minutes when the parkway behaves. If you are already on the Belt Parkway, take it west and cut up through Bensonhurst on Bay Parkway or 65th Street. Usually yes. We need reasonably level ground and enough room to swing a door wide and stand at the A-pillar. Those diagonal spaces by the boats are tight and the breeze off the water can be strong, so we will often ask you to move a block up onto a quieter side street near Voorhies Avenue. Rain stops us either way, because urethane will not cure wet.
It shortens the life of what sits underneath it. The urethane itself holds up well. Once moisture gets past a chipped molding, though, it reaches bare steel, and near this stretch of coast that steel gives up faster than it would inland. Pulling a windshield off a car kept by the marinas, we check the flange first, grind back anything flaking, and prime it before a new bead ever goes down.
