Midwood keeps two kinds of car life going at once. On the numbered avenues you have detached houses with their own driveways, and a block later a six-storey apartment building where everybody fights for the same curb. Avenue J is the strip everybody means when they say they are going shopping, and between East 12th and East 16th it moves at the speed of a double-parked delivery. Avenue M and Kings Highway carry the rest of the retail, and Kings Highway in particular is a crosstown route where nobody is going slowly. Ocean Parkway splits the neighborhood with its service roads, benches and planted malls, so a car parked on the service lane sits close to a lane of moving traffic and a lot of pedestrian activity. Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue take the north-south load, both of them narrow once buses and trucks are in the mix. The Q runs in the open cut around East 16th Street, and Brooklyn College anchors the Flatbush Avenue end, which means student parking pressure on the streets nearby.

Trees are the first cause here. The side streets off Avenue L and Avenue M are properly canopied, and a canopy drops things: dead limbs after a nor'easter, and acorns all autumn, which chip glass one small star at a time. Second is roadwork grit. Kings Highway and Coney Island Avenue get patched constantly, and loose stone off a truck tailgate at 35 mph is enough to star a windshield. Third is the parked-car problem. Cars left overnight on the Ocean Parkway service roads or wedged in tight near the Brooklyn College blocks pick up door dings and smashed quarter glass more than cars sitting in a driveway. And a chip you ignored in July will run when the first cold snap hits and the defroster goes on full.
From most of Midwood the simple version is Kings Highway heading west until it meets Fort Hamilton Parkway, then a few blocks along to 5521, at 55th Street. Coming from the Avenue J end, take Ocean Parkway north to Fort Hamilton Parkway and follow it southwest, or cut across on 55th Street. It is about three miles either way and usually fifteen minutes, longer if Kings Highway is backed up mid-afternoon. There is curb space on the side streets by us. If none of that fits your day, we drive out instead: a driveway on East 21st Street or a flat spot off the service road works, as long as the weather is dry enough for urethane to cure.

Usually yes. Midwood has more private driveways than most of Brooklyn, and a driveway is the easiest place for us to work: level ground, no traffic, nobody honking. We need dry weather and a bit of clearance on the door side. If you are in one of the six-storey buildings with no driveway, a legal spot on a quiet side street works too.
It can be. The service roads carry real traffic and we need to open a door and stand beside the car for the better part of an hour without somebody clipping us. If we can move you onto the adjacent numbered street, we will. Otherwise bring it to the shop, since fifteen minutes of driving beats an unsafe setup.
