Tempered glass is built to shatter into blunt granules rather than blades, which is a kindness at the moment of impact and a nuisance for the hour that follows. The new pane goes in reasonably quickly. Getting the old one out of the vehicle is what takes patience, because the fragments travel: down into the door bottom, under seat rails, into the belt reel housing, into the heater vents if the window happened to be down. We pull the door card, vacuum the cavity, wipe out the run channels and check the regulator before any replacement glass goes near the track.
Rear glass on a hatch or sedan adds the defroster grid and, on some models, an antenna printed into the same surface, so tabs get treated gently and the seal receives a fresh bead instead of a smear over whatever was there.
