The first thing most people want is the hole covered, and that is fair when the car sits on a public street overnight. We can tape a weather barrier over the opening while the pane is on its way, though plastic is a stopgap, it flaps, and it stops nobody reaching in. Getting real glass back in the car is the fix. On a door that means pulling the trim panel, freeing the regulator, dropping the new pane into the channel and setting the run so the window seals against the weatherstrip without rattling at speed.
Rear glass on a hatch or a sedan is bonded rather than clamped, and it usually arrives with the defroster grid and sometimes the antenna printed into it. Those tabs are soldered to the glass itself, so the harness has to be released carefully and the panel positioned right the first time. No, and the difference matters. A windshield is laminated, two layers with plastic between them, so it cracks and holds together. Door and rear windows are tempered, heat-treated to break into small blunt granules instead of knife edges. That is a safety design, but it also means a chip in a side window cannot be repaired. Once it goes, the whole pane gets replaced.
